Antwerp based photographer Wouter Struyf

On our trip to Scotland (just before Christmas) we got to know Wouter Struyf (@fooliageand we are excited that Wouter joined the society. He was so kind to answer a few questions.

Can you tell us who you are and what you do for a living?

My Name is Wouter Struyf. Apparently people categorise me as a photographer, but I always correct them by saying I ‘m a biologist. Although i have spent my time in school studying plants/Animals/ecosystems/... and all other things that make this planet run I never earned any money with that master degree so people may be right if you look at it that way. Since graduating from University, all I have done is shooting photos, making magazines, traveling, riding bikes and enjoying my little family. Since a couple of months I stepped into a new adventures called HAVEN surf (@havensurf) where I will be manning the shop two days a week but also be responsible for the creative part of it all. It has been really fun until now and I hope it will keep growing and bringing loads of new adventures to me. If you’re around Antwerp don’t hesitate to come say hi!

Why do you support The Bamboo Brush Society?

As an avid candy eater, brushing my teeth is a necessary evil and to do it with environmentally friend tool it makes it more fun.

What do you think of the Bamboo toothbrush?

It might be a small piece of the solution to a better planet for our children but all little things can make up for a greater cause.

Being a photographer you get to travel to a lot of great places. What’s the best spot you have brushed your teeth?

It’s difficult to choose one place in particular, but Svalbard has to be one of the most memorable places I have traveled to. We stayed there for to weeks in tents, back to the basics. Washing up, brushing your teeth, drinking, … all from the same stream of water. you have to be very careful not mess up where you do what.  It was a struggle at some points but I would do it again without hesitating.

If you would not have become a photographer what would you have become ?

A very unhappy person I guess.. Thanks to my lovely lady I can have this amazing life of traveling and doing what I love most.

What’s your best travel story?

I ‘m a terrible story teller. So I ‘m gonna pass on this one if that’s ok.

What is the last film you watched?

I don’t have the patience to sit down and watch a movie. I have been into watching House of Cards lately. 50 minutes I can handle.

Share your best photo on your phone ! Make us laugh

I only have screen-shots of pretty girls and amazing line-ups on my phone to be honest. Nothing really to laugh about. But this one makes me smile...

How do you get inspired ?

You can find so many good things on the web (Instagram/Pinterest/…) these days, but it’s the magical moments being out in nature, enjoying the small things in life most people take for granted.

What would you tell yourself when you would be 18 again?

Get out and explore! During my university studies I never had the feeling I was missing out and graduated pretty easy but afterwards being able to see so many amazing places and meeting people who did it differently I think I would go traveling after high school. Enjoy this amazing planet and learn while doing fun stuff.

I don’t regret anything but I hope I will be able to give my kids the option to get out there and see some stuff before they enter the evil world of studying and working as we know it.

If you can go on a trip tomorrow to any place in the world, where would you go?

That’s an unfair question, there are so many places I still want to visit but I think it has to be Patagonia or Alaska.
