Why Bamboo?
Bamboo is one of the most sustainable and versatile materials on our beautiful planet. It grows faster than Usain Bolt runs and doesn’t need any fertilizers. The plants are used almost entirely, its shoots are beautiful, and we are only using 1% of the available amount. Check out our blog on bamboo to learn more!
Where does our bamboo come from?
Our bamboo comes from the Anji area in China. Why China? While bamboo grows in other countries as well, China’s bamboo production is the most advanced and efficient. Roots are turned into food, the large parts become furniture, and the smaller parts grow up to be toothbrushes, chopsticks, or toothpicks. China has strict regulations on harvesting bamboo. And currently we only use 1% of its availability.
What about the pandas, aren’t they pissed off?
The panda eats
42 species of Bamboo. However, the bamboo we use (Moso Bamboo) grows up to 28 meters high, so the leaves are out of the panda’s reach. We love pandas!
What material are the bristles?
Our bristles are made of castor oil fiber and nylon and they are free of BPA and petroleum. The oil extracted from the plant is mixed with nylon. The bristles are therefore not 100% biodegradable, due to the fact there is nylon inside, but they are currently the best option available on the market. The only biodegradable material available today is pig hair, but we like animals, so we hope you understand that this is not an option for us. We are constantly seeking environmentally-friendly alternatives, but until then remove the bristles for proper disposal! If you have any ideas please let us know at:
hello@thebamboobrushsociety.com
Is the brush 100% biodegradable?
The handle is made from 100% sustainable bamboo and can be put in your home compost or in a commercial composting bin. The bristles are made from Nylon 6 and are not biodegradable. Please see the next topic on how to dispose of the bristles correctly.
Are the products tested on animals?
We do not test our products on animals, and that will never change!
We did conduct an extensive survey among 37 types of marine life, from turtles and dolphins, to seahorses and shrimp. Surprising outcome: they unanimously agree there is too much plastic in the water, but they don’t care how we brush our teeth.
BRUSH CAIR & DISPOSAL
How do I care for my bamboo toothbrush?
Since bamboo is a natural material, it is best to keep your brush in an open, dry area. Our advice is to store your brush upright and in an open-air toothbrush holder!
Dentists recommend replacing your toothbrush every 3 months. Check out our subscription service, and get fresh brushes delivered right to your door!
How do I dispose of the brush properly?
For proper, sustainable disposal, the bristles have to be separated from the handle. With any basic pair of pliers this is quite easy and it gives micro muscles in your hand, arm, and shoulder a little workout. You’re welcome! Also remove the small metal plate that keeps the bristles together.
Now you’re ready to put the handle in your home compost or in a commercial composting bin. The bristles go in your plastic recycling bin.
Don't forget to check out our Bamboo Recycling Program!
Bamboo Recycling Program
The Bamboo Recycling Program lets you return your brush back to us to be recycled. Our first recycling project is making a reshaped surf board out of the nylon. After that, we will look for new recycling goals and more applications for used nylon bristles.
